Public speaking has been said to be scarier for many people than death!  It doesn’t have to be.  You can actually learn to enjoy it.  But overcoming fear of speaking in public is only some of what this section is all about.

We are going to delve into speech-making, but most of this section on public speaking is going to deal with giving presentations. What's the difference between a speech and a presentation?

Well, right now let's just leave it at this.  A presentation is:

  1. A commitment you, the presenter, make to help the audience accomplish something

  2. An ongoing evaluation the audience makes of you, deciding if your commitment is of worth to them

A speech is much less focused.  It starts out “flat” and only broadens.  A presentation, on the other hand, starts out narrow and sharpens to a point.  It focuses on giving the audience something specific.

Now, if you’re going to advance in your career, you’ll be smart to make yourself the one others see volunteering to make presentations.  The intelligence, confidence, and can-do attitude that is demonstrated simply by volunteering to get up and communicate valuable information will be like gold to you.

And if you’re starting or running your own business -- even one you run off your computer -- how many customers could you reach by going to the right places and talking about what you do?

Is that frightening?  It won’t be, once you equip yourself to be a relaxed, informed, and confident speaker.

Some of the subjects we’ll cover in these articles include:

  1. What makes an excellent business presentation

  2. Getting around your fear of public speaking

  3. The doors that open when you learn how to treat presenting as performing (this one’s powerful!)

  4. How to wake ‘em up with solid presentation skills training

  5. Discover the power of audience participation, just one example of advanced presentations skills training

  6. How influential improving eye contact can be

  7. How to write a speech and other presentation concerns

  8. . . . and a growing body of other resources

Make up your mind right now to do something about your career . . . and your life!  Doing something others fear will set you apart.  Doing that thing really, really well will make you one of a kind.
